Ph.D. | ABPP-CN | Collegiate Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry | University of Michigan

Dr. Hampstead holds both the Philip B. and Myrna R. Fischer Research Professor of Neurology and the Stanley Berent, Ph.D. Collegiate Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at the University of Michigan, where he maintains the rank of Professor with Tenure. He holds a joint appointment as a Staff Neuropsychologist in the Department of Veterans Affairs for the last 19 years and has been board certified in Clinical Neuropsychology for the past 15 years. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Hampstead’s research focuses on the early detection of cognitive decline and on non-pharmacologic interventions (e.g., cognition-oriented treatments and non-invasive brain stimulation) to maximize cognitive and emotional functioning in older adults across the dementia spectrum. His team integrates functional and structural neuroimaging to predict treatment response, identify the neuroplastic changes following treatment, and plan/develop new interventions. Their ongoing work also leverages positron emission tomography (PET) and blood-based biomarkers to better characterize individual-level factors associated with treatment response. He holds a prestigious R35 ADRD Leadership award from the National Institute on Aging and has maintained continuous federal funding for over 19 years, with support from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense, various foundations, and generous philanthropic support. Dr. Hampstead holds one patent and is preparing additional applications related to neuromodulation.
